If you are planning to submit a PF withdrawal, process a transfer, or access any EPFO claim service this week — stop right here and read this first.
EPFO has officially announced that its online claim submission and processing services will be completely unavailable from June 26 to June 28, 2026, due to a major planned system upgrade and database migration. Adding to the disruption, EPFO-related services on the UMANG app will remain unavailable for an even longer period — until July 2, 2026.
This blog by HN Gupta & Co., Mumbai, gives you the complete picture — what is down, what still works, what to do about pending or urgent claims, and why EPFO is doing this now.
Section 1: What EPFO Has Officially Announced
In an official notice displayed on its member portal, EPFO stated:
"To enhance service delivery, improve processing efficiency and provide a better user experience, EPFO is undertaking a planned database consolidation and upgradation of software applications for the claims processing system. As part of this transition, submission and processing of claims through this portal will remain temporarily unavailable from 00:00 hrs on June 26, 2026, to 23:59 hrs on June 28, 2026."
Additionally, EPFO posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle confirming that services on the Member Portal, Employer Portal, and UMANG App will all be unavailable between June 26 and June 29, 2026, as part of this planned system migration. The temporary suspension is described as part of an upgrade aimed at providing faster, more reliable, and secure services to all stakeholders once completed.
Section 2: Exact Dates and Timing of the Outage
Here is the precise downtime schedule so you can plan accordingly:
EPFO Member Portal — Claim Services
- Downtime starts: 00:00 hours (midnight) on June 26, 2026.
- Downtime ends: 23:59 hours on June 28, 2026.
- Services expected to resume: 00:00 hours on June 29, 2026.
EPFO Employer Portal
Downtime covers the same June 26 to June 28-29 window for employer-side services.
UMANG App — EPFO Services
UMANG has displayed a separate notification stating that EPFO services on the app are under scheduled maintenance and will remain unavailable until July 2, 2026 — a longer window than the main portal, due to separate infrastructure migration requirements.
This means even after the main EPFO portal resumes on June 29, UMANG app users will need to wait until July 2 for full EPFO service restoration on the app.
Section 3: What Services Are Affected — Complete List
The following services are suspended during the maintenance window:
On the EPFO Member Portal
- New claim submissions — PF withdrawal (Form 19), EPS withdrawal (Form 10C), partial advance (Form 31), and pension claim (Form 10D) cannot be submitted during this window.
- Claim processing — even claims already in the queue will not be actively processed during the upgrade period.
- E-passbook access — may be unavailable or limited during the migration.
- UAN-linked services — linking UAN for new employees and Aadhaar-UAN linking services may be affected.
- Online transfer requests — PF transfer from old to new employer through the member portal will not be available.
On the EPFO Employer Portal
- ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return) filing — employers will not be able to file their monthly ECR during the maintenance window.
- UAN generation for new employees — cannot be done through the portal.
- KYC approval for employees — digital approval of Aadhaar and bank account KYC for employees will be suspended.
On the UMANG App
PF balance check, passbook view, claim submission, claim tracking, UAN-related services, grievance registration, establishment search, scheme certificate application, and Jeevan Pramaan Certificate submission — all affected until July 2, 2026.
Section 4: What Services Still Work During the Downtime
While the portal and UMANG are down — you are not completely cut off from your EPF account. Here are the alternative channels that remain functional:
Missed Call Balance Service
Give a missed call from your UAN-registered mobile number to 9966044425. You will receive an automated SMS with your current PF balance and basic account details. This service remains operational throughout the maintenance period.
SMS Service
Send EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899 from your UAN-registered mobile number. You will receive account balance and basic contribution information via return SMS. Free of charge.
WhatsApp Regional Office Service
EPFO's regional offices provide WhatsApp-based query services for members. Send a Hello message to the official WhatsApp number of your respective regional EPFO office to get information and respond to routine queries in local languages. For Mumbai members — the relevant offices are EPFO Mumbai-I (LBS Road, covering South Mumbai) and EPFO Mumbai-II (BKC, covering Andheri, Bandra, and western suburbs). Check epfindia.gov.in for the specific WhatsApp numbers.
EPFO Helpline — 14470
The EPFO helpline at 14470 remains operational during the maintenance window. For urgent queries, general information, or if you face specific problems related to the downtime — call 14470 for assistance.
Regional EPFO Offices in Mumbai
For genuinely urgent matters that cannot wait — physical EPFO offices remain accessible during their normal working hours. Carry your documents and your UAN card.
Section 5: What Happens to Claims Already Submitted
This is the most important question for members who have a claim currently in progress.
Your Claim Will NOT Be Cancelled
If you submitted a PF withdrawal, transfer, or any other claim before June 26 — your claim is safe. EPFO has confirmed that claims submitted before the migration period will not be cancelled or put on hold in a way that requires re-submission.
Processing Will Resume After Upgrade
Once the upgraded system goes live from June 29 onwards, EPFO will resume processing all pending claims. Claims already in the system will be taken up on priority. However, expect a brief additional delay of a few days as EPFO works through the backlog of claims that accumulated during the maintenance window.
You Do Not Need to Resubmit
EPFO has explicitly stated that members with pending claims do not need to apply again. Resubmitting a claim during this period would simply create a duplicate entry and further complicate processing once services resume.
What to Do
Check your claim status on June 29 when portal services resume. If your claim shows as pending or delayed beyond a reasonable period after June 29, file a grievance on epfigms.gov.in or contact the helpline at 14470.
Section 6: What Employers Must Know About ECR Filing
For employers across Mumbai — particularly those managing payroll compliance for businesses in Andheri, BKC, Thane, and Navi Mumbai — the portal downtime has specific implications for ECR filing.
June ECR Filing
The PF deposit and ECR filing deadline for June 2026 contributions is July 15, 2026. Since the portal resumes on June 29, there is adequate time to complete ECR filing and contribution deposit before the July 15 statutory deadline. No extension is expected or needed.
What to Avoid
Do not attempt ECR filing between June 26 and June 28 — the portal will not accept submissions during this window. Any payment instructions sent to the EPFO bank account during this period without a corresponding valid ECR will create reconciliation issues.
New Employee UAN and KYC
If you have new employees joining during June 26-28 who need UAN generation or KYC approval — these actions will need to wait until June 29 when the employer portal resumes. Ensure your HR team is aware of this so onboarding compliance is completed promptly from June 29 onwards.
Contractor Compliance
If you were planning to collect ECR receipts from contractors as part of your monthly compliance verification — note that contractors also cannot file ECR during this window. Build this delay into your contractor compliance tracking for the month.
Section 7: Why EPFO is Doing This Upgrade Now
A 3-day shutdown affecting 7 crore subscribers is not a decision EPFO takes lightly. Understanding the rationale helps appreciate the bigger picture.
Part of EPFO 3.0 Digital Transformation
This system migration is a critical step in EPFO's broader EPFO 3.0 initiative — the most ambitious digital overhaul in the organisation's 70-year history. EPFO 3.0 is building the infrastructure for UPI-based PF withdrawal, ATM-linked PF access, automated straight-through claim processing, and a centralised pension payment system. None of these advanced features are possible on the old backend architecture.
Database Consolidation
EPFO's historical infrastructure had data distributed across multiple regional systems. The current migration is consolidating these into a single centralised database — which eliminates inconsistencies between regional records, speeds up cross-region claim processing, and makes the centralised auto-settlement system possible.
Handling Growing Digital Demand
EPFO's digital transaction volume has grown exponentially in recent years. More members are filing claims online. More employers are filing ECR digitally. The UMANG app handles crores of queries monthly. The current systems were designed for a lower load — the new infrastructure is being built to handle the volume of a truly modern digital pension organisation.
Timing with Interest Credit
The Finance Ministry recently ratified the 8.25% EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26. Crediting interest to 7 crore+ accounts simultaneously requires robust backend systems. Completing this upgrade before triggering the interest credit process ensures the crediting happens smoothly and accurately across all accounts.
The short-term disruption of 3 days is a necessary investment for a significantly faster, more reliable system that will serve subscribers for years to come.
Section 8: Action Plan — What to Do Right Now
Based on everything covered above, here is a clear action plan for different categories of members:
If You Had a Claim to Submit Urgently
If it is before midnight of June 25-26 when you read this — log in to the EPFO member portal immediately and submit your claim now. Once you cross midnight on June 26, you will need to wait until June 29.
If you cannot file before June 26, wait until June 29 when portal services resume. The claim will then be processed under the upgraded, faster system.
If You Have a Claim Already Submitted and Pending
No action needed. Your claim is safe and in queue. Check status on June 29 after portal resumes. Do not resubmit.
If You Need PF Balance Information Urgently
Use the missed call service — call 9966044425 from your registered mobile. Or send EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899. Both remain operational throughout the maintenance period.
If You Are an Employer with Compliance Actions Planned This Week
Complete any ECR filing, KYC approvals, or UAN generation before midnight on June 25-26, or plan to do these from June 29 onwards. July 15 is the ECR deadline — you have sufficient time after the portal resumes.
If You Have an Urgent Issue That Cannot Wait
Call EPFO helpline at 14470. Explain your situation and the helpline team can advise on available options and direct you to the nearest regional office in Mumbai if needed.
Section 9: Frequently Asked Questions
I urgently need to withdraw PF for a medical emergency during June 26-28. What can I do?
Online submission is not possible during this window. Call the EPFO helpline at 14470 immediately and explain the medical urgency. For genuine emergencies, EPFO helpline staff can advise on reaching your nearest regional EPFO office in Mumbai — EPFO Mumbai-II at BKC handles western suburbs including Andheri, Bandra, Malad, and EPFO Mumbai-I at LBS Road handles South Mumbai, Dadar, and Kurla areas. Physical offices remain open during normal working hours.
Will my pending PF claim be cancelled because of this maintenance?
No. EPFO has confirmed that all claims submitted before the migration period will be processed once services resume. You do not need to resubmit. Expect a slight additional delay of a few days as the system catches up on the backlog from the maintenance window.
Can my employer deposit PF and file ECR during June 26-28?
ECR filing on the employer portal is suspended during the maintenance window. However, the PF deposit and ECR deadline for June contributions is July 15, 2026 — well after the portal resumes on June 29. Employers have adequate time to complete compliance after services are restored.
Why is UMANG down for longer than the portal?
The UMANG app's EPFO services are hosted on separate infrastructure that requires additional time for migration, testing, and deployment after the core portal upgrade. UMANG EPFO services are expected to resume by July 2, 2026, compared to June 29 for the main portal. Use the missed call (9966044425) or SMS service (7738299899) for balance checks during this extended UMANG downtime.
How do I know when EPFO services are fully restored?
Check epfindia.gov.in directly — the portal will be accessible again from June 29 with a confirmation message. Follow EPFO's official X account and the UMANG app notification for real-time restoration updates. Alternatively, call 14470 for service status.
Does this downtime affect the 8.25% FY26 interest credit to my account?
The 8.25% FY 2025-26 interest credit is expected this month following Finance Ministry ratification. The system upgrade may mean the interest credit happens after June 29 on the upgraded system rather than during the downtime period — which is actually better, as the upgraded system will process the interest credit faster and more accurately. Check your passbook after June 29.
